The Cayman Islands will celebrate Queen Elizabeth II 93rd birthday on Saturday, June 8, 2019.
The celebrations will include a parade in-front of the Legislative Assembly in George Town and a 21-gun salute on the Saturday. The ceremony kicks-off at 9 a.m. sharp and all are invited to attend. The event will be followed by a garden party hosted by Governor Martyn Roper at Government House on Seven Mile Beach.
The Queen’s birthday will also be marked with a public holiday, on Monday, June 10.
Why does the Queen have two birthdays?
Queen Elizabeth’s birthday is actually on April 21; however, her birthday has always been celebrated in the summer when the weather is better in the U.K., where it is celebrated with the Trooping of the Colour, a tradition which was started in 1748 with King George II.
Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning monarch and has lived much of her life in the public eye. She was born on April 21, 1926, as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary to the Duke and Duchess of York. She grew up in London with her sister Princess Margaret and took the throne in 1952.
Fun facts about the Queen
In celebration of the Queen’s birthday, here are eight fun facts about Queen Elizabeth II.
She was tutored at home, studying constitutional history and law in preparation for her role as Queen. She also took lessons in religion from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
She speaks fluent French, thanks to French and Belgian governesses who cared for her from a young age.
She served in WWII and was the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services as a full-time active member. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945, where she also learnt to drive, although as the Queen she is exempt from having to have a driving licence, license plate, or even passport.
She is a dog-lover. During her lifetime she has owned more than 30 corgis and has even bred them herself. And, if owning some 30 corgis wasn’t enough, she also owns all the swans and dolphins in U.K. waters.
Her favourite nail polish colour is Ballet Slippers, a gorgeous pale pink shade by popular nail brand Essie. It is one of the brand’s most popular colours due to this royal patronage.
She is rarely seen in public without her handbag (almost always a handbag by Launer London), which she reportedly uses to send messages to her staff. If she places her bag on the table, it means that she wants to leave within five minutes. If she puts her bag on the floor it reportedly means she is not enjoying the conversation and wants to be rescued.
She made a cameo appearance with actor Daniel Craig who reprised his role as British secret agent James Bond. The six-minute action sequence was made to promote the 2012 Olympics, which were held in London. View it here.
She doesn’t have an alarm clock. Instead she is woken up by a bagpiper each morning, who plays outside her window for 15 minutes every morning at 9 a.m. The player is known as the Piper to the Sovereign.
