Contestants gear up for the Miss Cayman Islands Universe 2019

Contestants are honing their skills for the upcoming Miss Cayman Islands Universe. On Saturday, Aug. 16 at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, current Miss Cayman Islands Universe, Caitlin Tyson, will hand over the crown to Cayman’s new queen.

Here are this year’s six contestants vying for the crown:

Mahalia Seymour

Age: 25 Location: George Town Favourite quote: “Aim to be a better me than I was yesterday.”

Among Mahalia’s greatest passions is protecting the environment. She spends time encouraging others to reduce plastic waste and practice proper disposal and recycling, and she has led multiple beach clean-ups. Mahalia also aims to highlight mental health, a topic on which awareness is currently growing in the Cayman Islands and on which she hopes the public can receive the education they need to understand and combat mental health issues.

Mahalia believes a Miss Cayman Islands Universe should show humility, communicate clearly, and leave a significant impact.

Samantha Dixon

Age: 27 Location: East End Favourite quote: “Grow through what you go through.”

Samantha loves to work towards improving the community. Highly driven in her career, she has earned a certification in risk management and over the last nine years has been continually promoted within the company at which she is employed. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, reading, and swimming.

As Miss Cayman Islands Universe, she hopes to display qualities that include charisma and determination and believes that she possesses characteristics which can inspire other young people. Her motto is, “if it doesn’t scare you, it doesn’t challenge you.”

Mariah Tibbetts

Age: 25 Location: Bodden Town Favourite Quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” – Marianne Williamson

One of Mariah’s greatest interests is health and fitness including resistance training, yoga, cycling, dance, and running. She was a “Proud of Them” honouree in 2014, first runner-up for Miss Teen Cayman Islands in 2011, and a Deloitte scholarship recipient in 2010. She belongs to organisations including 100 Women in Finance and NextGen Cayman.

As Miss Cayman Universe, she believes she will display integrity and humility and serve as an ideal role model by representing the spirit of the islands.

Aleka Beckford

Age: 24 Location: Bodden Town

Favourite quote: “I want to leave my footprints on the sands of time.” - Beyonce

Aleka enjoys photography and art as well as impacting her community, where she has a special focus on youth development. She hopes to share her love of the Cayman Islands with the world and inspire another generation of Caymanians. She is interested in youth parliament and is now pursuing degree in management studies online at the University of the West Indies.

She believes in the importance of showcasing Caymanian culture through a kind and outgoing attitude.

Francine Wright

Age: 23 Location: Bodden Town

Favourite quote: “Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.” – Christopher Robin

Francine Wright is proud of her Caymanian heritage and believes that this will help her serve as an effective ambassador to the Cayman Islands. She has been a member of the Cultural and Entertainment Affairs Committee and a Black and Ethnic Minorities Officer during her time at Brunel University in London, and she currently belongs to the GAH Mentorship Programme at the University of the West Indies, where she is pursuing a degree in marketing.

In her free time, Francine enjoys travelling and community service. She describes herself as outgoing and skilled at interpersonal relationships.

Kadejah Bodden

Age: 23 Location: Bodden Town Favourite quote: “The ultimate test of man’s conscience maybe his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.”

Kadejah holds a degree in biochemistry and a master’s degree in regenerative medicine from Queen Mary University in London, U.K. She is passionate about promoting awareness of the environment and climate change. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, reading, paddle boarding, and keeping up with the latest news on community affairs.

Kadejah hopes to find a way to create positive change in the Cayman Islands and believes that Miss Cayman Islands Universe will provide an effective means to do so.
